Who is responsible
This website (julianveycroft.com) is operated by the author publishing as Julian Veycroft. You can reach the operator through the contact page.
The short version
- No advertising, no third-party trackers, no social-media pixels.
- No cookies are set for visitors. The only cookies on this site belong to the author's password-protected dashboard.
- Your IP address is never stored by this website's own database.
- Visitor statistics are anonymous counts; nothing is used to identify you or follow you across sites.
Visitor statistics
When a page loads, a small script on this site sends one anonymous measurement to this site's own server. It is not shared with any analytics company. Each measurement records:
| Recorded | Detail |
|---|---|
| The page viewed | Its path only (for example /books); search terms and other web-address parameters are not kept. |
| Where the visit came from | Only the domain of the referring website (for example google), never the full address. |
| Campaign tags | The source and medium of a tagged link, and the campaign name only if it is one the author has registered. |
| Country | Looked up on this site’s own server from your IP address in a country database (IP Geolocation by DB-IP). Only the two-letter country code is kept; your IP address is not stored. It is not precise location and can be wrong (for example when you use a VPN). |
| Device type | Desktop, mobile or tablet, derived from your browser's user-agent at the moment of the request. The user-agent itself is not stored. |
| Retailer clicks | That a retailer link on a book page was clicked. This is a click count only; we receive no information about purchases. |
No cookie, local storage or device identifier is used, so the site cannot recognise you on a later visit. "Visits" in our statistics are estimated from arrivals from outside the site, not from tracking individuals. Traffic that looks automated is filtered out where possible. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, no measurement is sent at all.
Individual measurements are kept for 90 days and are then deleted; only daily totals (for example, “12 views of the Books page from Canada on 3 May”) are kept, for up to 25 months.
Where data-protection law applies, the legal basis is the operator's legitimate interest in understanding, in aggregate, how the site and its books are found and used.
Contact form
If you send a message, your name, email address, subject and message are stored in this site's private database so the author can read and reply to them. They are not used for marketing, not added to any mailing list and not shared. Messages are deleted after 365 days, or sooner on request. To prevent spam, the form uses hidden checks that do not identify you.
Security and hosting
The site runs on a virtual server rented from Hetzner Online GmbH in the European Union. Like any web server, it processes your IP address to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks; the address is not written to this site’s database, statistics or access logs. To stop abuse of the contact form and the author's login, this site keeps a one-way, keyed fingerprint of the requesting IP address for no more than three days; the address itself cannot be recovered from it.
Retailer links
Book pages may link to retailers such as Amazon. When you follow such a link you leave this site, and the retailer's own privacy policy applies.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data held about you, and to complain to a data-protection authority. Because visitor statistics are anonymous, they cannot be linked back to you; for contact-form messages, please use the contact page.
